Before I could blink, I was on an airplane headed to the States. The drive out to the airport had been brutal, in the middle of a storm, and I was just relieved the flight had been able to take off as scheduled. I slept most of the way there, having passed out in the middle of a movie that had been way over-hyped.

A driver picked me up at the airport and drove me to my hotel, where I checked in and grabbed a quick shower before heading out to meet the client. Once again, a driver appeared to take me and I got into the car, wondering what I’d gotten myself into.

When I arrived at the “chalet,” I discovered it to be a large, sprawling mansion nestled into the mountain. One entire side was made of windows, privacy not being an issue given the seclusion of the property. The architecture was spectacular—majestic but not overstated. I was itching to get inside.

As soon as I stepped out of the car, the front door opened and a leather-clad guy emerged, a few years older than me. He was olive-skinned, with long hair and a road-worn look to him, like he’d been touring with a rock band for ages.

“Get out! That’s crazy, man. That was a good show. Next time I’ll get you backstage.”

I laughed.

“That would fucking kick ass.” I started walking around the space, getting a feel for it. “So what exactly is it you’re looking for?”

He walked me around the house, pointing out all the areas he wanted to commission pieces for. It would’ve been crazy for me to build them all at home and ship them out, and I said so.

“What do you suggest?” Damien asked.

I considered it for a moment.

“I could always rent out some space here, source the material locally. It would be the sustainable thing to do, in any case. I mean, look around.”

Damien laughed and clapped my back.

“I like you, dude. Yeah, that sounds great. When can you get started?”

I took a deep breath and did the mental math. I would definitely have to hire someone to watch the shop. And Lainey was only in town for another week—I didn’t want to lose the opportunity to see her.

“How about this? I’ll spend the next couple of days setting everything up, then I’ll go back home and take care of business. I’ll be back here next week to get started. Shouldn’t take longer than six weeks, two months tops.”

Damien reached out and we shook hands. After a brief exchange, I took him up on his offer to borrow his driver and started my search for a workspace. It was only when I was settled into the
